Network Storage does not reconnect if the connection is interrupted by VPN or network issue

  • I have the Network Storage set up on my device and it is working. It connects on startup and I am able to use it as a storage location.

However it will disconnect when I connect my VPN and it does not reconnect unless I go and manually connect it. I've also had my NAS reboot which causes it to disconnect and it will not reconnect unless I do it manually.

Is it possible to have the Network Storage retry the connection if it disconnects? Perhaps a feature request that it should retry the connection until it succeeds?

    Thanks.

  • Mostly connection issues over VPN are DNS related. Adding the IP and server name to the Hostfile is the quickest fix, Try connecting using the server’s IP instead of name and do an NSlookup to see what the computer using VPN is getting as DNS server.

  • I'm using the IP to connect to the network storage. The formuler box is disconnecting the network share when the VPN connection is enabled on the formuler box. I believe the issue is the network storage feature on the formuler box disconnects because the VPN connection is established.

I guess this is more of a feature request for the formuler box to reconnect the network storage, or maintain the connection if the connection should drop.

  • I'm not using the host name.

I'm connecting to a local network share by IP address.

The issue is when the connection drops it needs to be manually reconnected.

I believe the confusion is you think I'm using the VPN network wide but I'm only using it on the Formuler box with the Android app. It does not affect the rest of my network at all.

Sorry I should have been more clear on that.

-- To explain further, take the VPN out of the equation. Not using the VPN. When the server hosting the network share reboots, the Fomuler box drops the Network Share connection (as expected), but it doesn't reconnect until I manually reconnect it.

Same issue, as the VPN on the Formuler box is essentially re-establishing the connection to my network, which drops the Network Share.

  • I have no issues with my server or my network share. I have an issue with the Formuler box not reconnecting to it when the network is disrupted (enabling VPN on Android) or when the network connection is lost (cable unplugged and plugged back in to Formuler) or when the server hosting the share reboots.

I do not need to troubleshoot my server.

  • It's a SMB network share on a Windows Server.

VPN is Proton VPN and I have tried with Split Tunneling on/off.

    Same here.

Have a raspberry pi 5 with openmediavault nas software.

When i connect manual its okay.

But after restart and boot up it says. "Connected to nas" and then "disconnect to nas".

I uninstalled my nordvpn completely and then issue was over i thought or it was not🤔. (Will test it later for sure) so i can make it hard.

I added at splittunneling ALL apps for test and also same issue!

Its smb2 share. Tested it with smb3 share and same.

I have gave it almost up.

Maby try to set your device in standby? Did you test that already?

  • Standby no difference. "Network Storage" feature always auto connects and stays connected unless

    1) VPN activated/deactivated on Android, assume due to network disruption

    2) Server hosing SMB reboots or loses network connection (rare but indicates same issue)

To me both indicate when network is disrupted the "Network Storage" feature loses connection and does not attempt to reconnect.

  • Images and steps.

    1. Reboot Formuler, network storage connects automatically (storage icon)

    2. Open VPN and connect, get error on network storage

    3. Network storage icon is gone, does not reconnect automatically

    4. Go into Network storage and click mount, connects no problem
