It seems I've solved the problem. Apparently it wasn't the update. It was just a stupid coincidence.
I noticed that the error I mentioned always occurred after about 30 minutes... In the end I replaced the USB stick that I was using for timeshift. And since then everything has been running smoothly again.

I've also had extreme problems since I updated my Z8.
MOL2 just crashes after a random time. The screen turns gray and no longer responds to any inputs.
If I keep it running from there, the device will eventually hang in a loop and keep trying to restart.
The only thing that helps is pulling the plug.
From time to time I also get the message "leanback launcher has stopped responding".
The error does not occur with all other apps. Only in MOL2.
Need help.

No. Since reading this, I've only been using ok instead of the play button. But it still happens every now and then. So is independent of the key.

Happened to me now and then at irregular intervals. But that's not just been the case since the current firmware. I've had the Z8 since late 2019 and it's been happening ever since.

2 things that concern me and which I have not been able to find out so far:
1. Is it possible to place the VLC window somewhere else? bottom left I find disturbing ... up in a corner would be better solved.
2. how do I switch off the sound only in the VLC window? either the sound runs in both windows or I can turn it off completely. But have not yet figured out how I can only deactivate it with VLC.
