  • Hello everyone. I am new to this forum. I have used android boxes for years now, and thought I would get a proper box. I only have one question. How can I enable write access to my Sandisc USB stick. I use Kodi and want to perform a back up, but the box wont allow me to write to the SD card. My other problem is the same with my USB hard drive, the Z10 wont let me download to the drive. Any help would be appreciated. I am a 73 year ex TV engineer of 50 years, but the grey matter still works fine. Many thanks in anticipation.

  • Hi,NJ,are you sure you formatted the SD card and USB stick correctly, via Rufus programm, NFTS ?

  • Good afternoon Henkie. Yes, I have tried everything I can think of. If you go to USB storage, from FX file explorer, a message appears as follows. " This device does not support android storage access framework " ( error: Action-open-document tree not implimented by device). I have tried various sd cards and sandisc USB stick etc. All been formated by rufus in the NFTS system. Please have a think on this and let me know if there is anything else I can try. Your help would be much appreciated. Noel.

  • Hi, Noel, I do not have any obvious ideas,I guess its due to the android safety that is one of the specs of the Z10 series. Maybe you can attempt your goal by means of the File Manager, although I dont know much about how this works!

My advise is to wait for an expert opinion by Staff or Moderator SAM.

  • Noel,I looked it up in Market the name of the App is not File Manager but TV File Commander and it says File Commander is a powerful file manager that allows you to handle any file on your android device......

If you havent downloaded it yet ,its worth a try?

  • Good morning Henkie. Thanks for your trouble and time, I have tried the app you mentioned but get the same results. My Z10 will recognise both SD card and USB stick. It can read any files or data on them, but the problem is that the Z10 will not allow anything to be written to either. It won't allow any transfer whatsoever. I just keep getting the message that the android system will not allow anything to be written to external storage. I purchased a Nvidia Shield from Amazon but could not get that to write to external storage either, so I returned it. I think it must be a peculiarity to the operating system. I will wait and see if anyone else can shine a light on this, as you suggested. Thanks again for your interest in my problem. Kind regards, Noel.

Hi Noel. You answered your question already. The folder access restriction in OS 10 is the problem, google say because of data security. I know, it is also nonsense in my eyes to put such restrictions but with this problem have all manufacturer to deal currently.

  • I'm having the same issue as Noel. I just bought a new Z10 Pro Max. I attempted to separately attach an external Western Digital HDD, a thumb drive and a micro SD. In each case, I formatted the device in NFTS, using disk manager in Windows first, then using Rufus as suggested on this site. I also tried exFat formatting. In each case, the device is recognised by the Z10, as it shows up in the list of onboard storage devices when I check my device preferences. But when I attempt to download a video, the Z10 shows the file being downloaded, but it doesn't download to any of the previously formatted storage devices. (I tried each storage device separately). I cannot find the file downloaded elsewhere either. I read all over the internet internet that other people are able to install external storage on the Z10, but none of their descriptions on how to accomplish this seems to work for me. If I'm reading Sam's last reply correctly, it seems to imply that this issue is endemic to the Z10, yet if that's the case, others shouldn't be able to attach extra storage. Are there any other settings or fixes that I can try?

  • Its not only endemic to the Z10, as Noel tried a nivia shield as well, as far as i understand SAM correctly it is the case with all android devices.

Maybe the reports you read about external storage may apply to Firestick or Chromecast?

  • Hi henkie

Actually, the reports that I read online specifically refer to HDD's, thumb drives and cards. This is the 4th Android box that I've owned, and the previous 3 allowed me to attach an HDD or an SD card rather effortlessly. The Formuler is the first that I've had any difficulty with. I can use it with the on-board 32 Gb of storage. It actually works very well, and very quickly when it comes to searching and downloading files to the internal storage. I just tend to like to keep a lot files on-hand so that I can binge watch them when time permits.

So, as far as you know, there isn't a fix for this issue?

  • Sorry,I don"t have a solution for your problem.

  • FYI check out this description for mounting an HDD on a z10. I attempted this, and everything responded as described until I reached step 11. This screen doesn't show up for me (where I can choose between internal and external memory). Hence I was unsuccessful at accessing the external drive.
