It was told for SD but i have the impression too that HD looks also better.
If it looks good to you on all channels, why should you turn it off? I have it also all the time activated.
Is definitely working. I was observing with AIFR on and off. Have some channels which are with horrible low bitrate and AIFR makes for me a difference. Picture quality on the Z Mini is really spot on 
has the aifr been removed as its no0t an option in my menu
It`s calling AISR and not AIFR. Can be found -> home menu -> cog.wheel 2x -> Device Preferences -> Display and Sound
If still not shown, install latest Firmware and SW or do factory reset.
