  • Hi

I recently purchased a gtv and I really like this box.

However, I have one issue that I hope someone might be able to help with.

I am trying to watch some videos on a website. The website is https://play.rtl.lu/

I downloaded the Puffin TV browser, and also sideloaded the Chrome and Firefox browsers, but none of these will allow me to watch the videos on this site.

Is there anything I can do in settings to make this work? Or is there another app that could be used to view these videos?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

  • Thanks for your suggestion Danny. It was a good idea.

Unfortunately this RTL play is only for the Belgian RTL, and not for the RTL in Luxembourg, which is what I am trying to view.

Are there any Android TV web browsers that are able to play different video formats with ease?

  • Are you located in Luxembourg?

If not, install and use a VPN on GTV and set your location to Luxembourg.

Force stop Google Play Store and clear the Play Store cache.

Try to search the Play Store for the LUX version of RTL again.

Unsolicited PMs for support will be ignored.

Duplicate support requests to the forums and helpdesk will be ignored.

Tested Chrome and Puffin from Market Place and it works with that website you want.

I am based in UK using VPN set to UK using Z8 Pro.

Have MX player installed which might be what the browsers use to play videos:smiling_face_with_halo:

On GTV, tell google assistant to search videos from that website:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

  • Thanks for the replies everyone.

I am living in Luxembourg, so don't need to use a VPN to download Lux apps. However, there is no RTL Play app for Luxembourg. RTL Play is a new website that launched recently, but no app as yet.

There is an RTL Luxembourg app, which is used for Android phones and iphones, but I'm not sure if this is configured for TV use.

When I navigate to the website using Chrome, Firefox or Puffin, no videos will play for me. This is the same for me on the rtl.lu site.

I will try to intall MX Player and see if that helps.

    Thanks again.

  • Thank you to everyone for the feedback and suggestions.

It's great to know that there is a community that tries to help with issues that arise.

I tried with Hola VPN, but no luck with that.

On Puffin, Firefox and Chrome, I have had no joy with playing any of the videos on the https://play.rtl.lu/ site. When I click on a video, it looks like it's trying to play, but never gets any further. I can see how long each video is, but that is all.

Before I upgraded to the gtv box, I had an old media box which used to work for playing videos from the rtl.lu website. However, my old media box was not Android TV certified, so perhaps that is the issue.

Danny, I am able to use chromecast to cast from my phone, which is a workaround. However, I was hoping to launch straight from the gtv, as this is connected via ethernet, whereas my phone is using wi-fi, and sometimes the picture quality on the screen is not as clear.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi Mevi

    Thanks for your message.

I don't think it's a VPN issue. I live in Luxembourg, so it shouldn't be a problem to view these videos. I can watch them on my PC without any VPN.

However, when I try to view them through Puffin, or through Firefox or Chrome (which I sideloaded onto the GTV), the video will not start.

I thought it might be a permissions issue, but I tried to change the settings on Chrome and Firefox, with no luck.

I was wondering if it might be an Android TV codec issue. I'm not knowledgeable enough about this, but just wondered.

On my four year old media box, I didn't have this problem, which makes me think that it might be something to do with Android TV certified by Google. I'm really not sure.

    Thanks for trying to help.

  • So?

I also tested on Z8 Pro and had no issues playing the video on website - post #7

Can you play videos on other websites?

Remove and install browsers from Google play store - these will be for Android TV

Guessing both Mevi and I used browsers from Market / google play store on our Z8 / Z8 pro - could explain why it worked for us:smiling_face_with_halo:

  • Puffin was downloaded through google play store.

Chrome and Firefox are not available on the play store for google certified Android TV, and therefore had to be sideloaded.

When using Puffin, I am able to view videos on BBC News. However, the https://play.rtl.lu site does not allow me to view videos, even through Puffin. That made me wonder if it could be permission issue or a codec issue.

Hola VPN is a web browser with free integrated VPN. I know that you don't need the VPN, you can set the VPN as your location, it doesn't matter. It works flawlessly with the website you provided. In my theory it should work on GTV if it works on Z8. I had the same issue with streaming from websites and this web browser was the only one that worked for me.

I also tested on Z8 Pro and had no issues playing the video on website - post #7

But you didn't test with Hola VPN.

  • Thanks for the replies.

I'm happy to say that I've found a workaround for this issue.

If I try to view the site by first opening Kodi and then the Puffin browser when I am inside the Kodi software, everything works.

If I open the Puffin Browser as normal, for some reason, it doesn't.

    Thanks again.
