  • I am currently using a firestick for my iptv service. However they are awful with VPN speeds. I use pia. On my laptop I’m getting 105mb down with no vpn and 70 down with Vpn. The firestick will only do 18 at best down. At busy times when my overall speed drops the iptv becomes useless through the Vpn.

I am looking to upgrade and have heard good things re the formula z7 boxes. My question is will I suffer the same slow Vpn speeds as the firestick or is the hardware on the formula box able to produce higher speeds?

You won't get laptop-like speeds. Ony desktop I would get 90% of my full speed, whereas with the formuler I believe I was getting on the order of 25-50% if I remember correctly.

Depending on your router, it can be quite easy to put the VPN there, that's what I recommend.

  • I have the suppliers own router. It’s virgin Media hub 3.0. I can put this in modem mode and use another router.

Does putting the Vpn on the router increase the speed?

What router do you recommend for this?

  • Strange! Pia is Very good VPN it is fast enough. Maybe Pia is unlucky for you. So I recommend you to go with ExpressVPN because it is one of the fastest VPN provider in the VPN industry. It offers 30 days money back guarantee, Problem is that it is pretty expensive then others, If you have a budget then you can go with Express, If not you can check out some other fastest options: https://www.vpnlocator.com/fastest-vpns/

  • markophillips, I believe Pedro2019 issue isn’t regarding the lack of speed from PIA, but rather the lack of speed coming from his device (firestick). Running a VPN on a device requires that device to be of certain processing power in order to make the VPN run well (it can run on a slow processor like what is found in a firestick, but it will typically not provide fast VPN speeds). Even the processor on the Formuler devices aren’t not ‘great’ if you want high VPN speeds.

So changing to another VPN is unlikely to fix Pedro2019 problem (I’ve tried 2-3 VPNs on my formuler, PIA, Nord, and one other, and I get similar speeds from all).

Pedro2019, I’ve read good things about the Asus AC88U & AC86U routers (expensive though). The AC68U from ASUS is a bit cheaper and also good. Basically, a router with a fast CPU is what you’re after.

Ps some quick googling seemed to hint that you can install a VPN on your virgin router so may be worth looking into before buying something else!

  • I suggest you research the hardware, I was struggling to get good speeds on a Rosewill RNX-N300RT and only did 20Mbps on VPN out of the 100Mbps capable from this old hardware. I "upgraded" to a TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 capable of 1000Mbps and got THE SAME slow VPN speeds. The problem is the chip that handles encryption. I upgraded again to a beast of a custom system in terms of necessary hardware, a PFSense firewall/router (it's an actual computer you turn into a router, AES-NI capable CPU for handling crypto, also a necessary CPU feature for future PFSense versions) and with this I can basically get my full 400/40Mbps I pay for my ISP through VPN. This setup isn't completely necessary but as seanns32 mentions above, the routers capable of it can get expensive, I did this with $93 (used desktop and a 4 LAN Gigabit card for my computers, and a whole lot of tinkering trying to learn how PFSense works. If you count the TP-Link Archer C7 as another expense, since the PFSense computer doesn't have WiFi itself, then it's basically like another $200 system in total.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the Formuler Z7+ has a 100Mbps LAN port, no VPN I will see around 90Mbps on average, with the VPN app I can see that drop down to around 30-40Mbps. Not bad if that's all you need, but it might vary, maybe someone else can chime in with their results? With my PFSense setup I get the full speed the LAN port on the Z7+ is capable of.

Edited 3 times, last by BlindF123: *Changed results in Edit, I was mixing up L2TP VPN results with PIA app results. (January 23, 2019 at 8:34 PM).

  • i have used pfsense and can achieve 250Mbps on OpenVPN and about the same on an Asus AC86U router with hardware acceleration. NEVER seen anyone get much higher than these speeds on pfsense. It's just not possible with OpenVPN, but now higher speeds are coming with wireguard, especially on Asus routers and Merlin f/w.
